In 1997 I was a member of IFOR & SFOR NATO missions that crossed the Sava river from Croatia into Bosnia and helped force a stop to the ethnic cleansing/wholesale slaughter of civilians going on there. Possible the most noble cause I’ve even been involved in. One of the areas we had work in was the city of Srebrenica. Srebrenica was the site of a 1995 massacre witnessed by the U.N. forces that could do nothing to prevent it.
More than 7,000 Muslim men and boys were killed in the Bosnian town of Srebrenica in 1995 when ethnic Serb troops overran a United Nations safe area. The five-day slaughter was the worst European massacre since World War II and was described by the U.N. War Crimes Tribunal as “the triumph of evil.”
This horrific display of U.N. inability to do a thing to defend the people, or even themselves, is what sparked President Clinton to push NATO (i.e. America) into the Balkans to end the madness.
So short story long……… it warmed my hart this morning to be drinking my coffee and saw this story from CNN:
(CNN) — Seven former high-ranking Bosnian Serb military and police officials were convicted Thursday for their roles in the notorious 1995 Srebrenica massacre, the war crimes tribunal in The Hague said.
May it give some closure to the families of those 7000 murdered. Many of whom I have meet and will remember always.
