The 51st State?

Let’s stop screwing around and start taxing these folks!

U.S.News: By a vote of 54-46 percent on Tuesday, Puerto Ricans, in a non-binding referendum, said that they would like to change their Commonwealth status. In a second question, 61 percent said they would support statehood, 33 percent said they’d like a new pact with the United States, and just 5 percent said they’d like to become independent. The last time Puerto Ricans were asked about their feelings on statehood, in 1998, a majority opposed becoming a state.

Oh wait a second …… never mind.

What is the chart telling me?

  2. Unemployment steady o/a 15% and all economic indicators tanking.

Statehood doesn’t change unemployment benefits but the Income tax kicks in.

  4. Yup. They currently get most of the same benefits of residents of the current states without Fed taxes. But the business tax revenue is questionable in their economy. With their average mean salary, over 80% would not pay any taxes anyway so it just becomes a wash. Without business revenue potential then it’s just another welfare state. Both of my left/right house neighbors are from P.R. and love the island, but would not want to live there as a retirement local. It’s a tank of welfare and bad economics.

I thought that was Michigan. Oop! California

Yes, grant them their wish, and let ’em regret it!

  7. I just want to see how they add one more start to the flag………. I think they’d need to pull in Guam, Marshal Islands and some other random place to make it even. Wouldn’t want Old Glory to look weird.

    American Samoa, Philipines and Cuba

  9. Ah forgot about America Samoa. The Philippines came close. Think it was in the 60s. Cuba does have nice beaches, but I don’t think they’d be too keen on that idea.

  10. caohaoim says:

The Cuban population would be quite keen. The Brothers Castro would not. The Cuban beaches have not stated a preference.

  11. Good SCUBA diving there I hear.

Only ever did the Mighty Muddy and the Great Lakes. Salt water would confuse me/
